Pacifiers and Thumb-Sucking

Dipping a pacifier in a sweetener is similar to putting a baby to sleep with a bottle of sugary liquid. It can lead to deterioration of the baby’s teeth. If you dip your child’s pacifier in any sort of sugary liquid prior to giving it to him/her, be sure to brush his/her teeth and gums afterward with a soft toothbrush and water.

Your child’s oral cavity is forming and changing as they grow. Thumb sucking can impact the development of the oral cavity in a negative way and change its shape leading to spacing issues for both permanent teeth and baby teeth. Most children stop thumb sucking on their own, however, if your child is still sucking his or her thumb past the age of 3, work with your dentist on healthy ways to discourage the habit.
